The Traditional Martial Art of Thailand which transmits the unarmed combat methods of the ancient Thai Warrior has recently been resurrected with the denomination of "MuayThai Boran"(มวยไทยโบราณ).
This renaissance of the Ancient Art can be attributed to the diligent and dedicated work of the Thai Grandmasters of the Kru Muay Thai Association.
The Historical Art is the progenitor of the eight limb ring fighting sport of Muay Thai .
It includes the renowned methods of that commercial entertainment form as well as a gammit of other physical and academic elements which are absent in the sporting world.
The traditional curriculum which are derived from Ancient texts and an unbroken lineage of Masters with a knowledge of the formerly obscure methods consist of various Regional, Inspired and Eponymous Styles of the Muay Arts.
Today the Muay Thai Boran Intelligentsia of KMA, comprised of the esteemed Grandmasters, have compiled a cross-section of traditions and techniques that represent the various stylistic Traditions such as the eponymous styles, most notably the Tiger King Style or "Muay Pra Jao Seua" (พระเจ้าเสือ).
Or Styles which are inspired by animals, such as the King Elephant Style (มวยคชสาร) which was developed by the Royal Elephant Guards Regimen or "Jaturongkabat" (จตุรงคบาท), who were inspired by the combative movements of the war elephants.
In addition to these remarkable styles are the five primary lineages or 5 Muay Thai Boran Sai (มวยไทยโบราณ ๕ สาย), which have been elucidated by the Grandmasters as follows :
1. MUAY CHAIYA (มวย สาย ไชยา) The Southern Style of the Surat Thani Province.
2. MUAY KORAT (มวย สาย โคราช) The Northeastern Style of the Nakhon Rachasima Province.
3. MUAY LOPBURI (มวย สาย ลพบุรี) The Central Style of the Lopburi Province, purportedly founded by an ascetic named Sukatanta Reusi (ปรมาจารย์สุกะทันตะฤๅษี)
4. MUAY THASAO (มวย สาย ท่าเสา) The Northern Style of the Uttaradit Province.
5. MUAY PRAYA PICHAI (มวย สาย พระยา พิชัย) Named after a famous fighter from the Uttaradit Region.
The Grandmasters have developed a standardized academic syllabus.
These syllabi have several categorical collections that address all aspects of the Arts techniques.
The curricula consist of Chung Muay (เชิงมวย), Mae Mai (เเม่ไม้), Look Mai (ลูกไม้), Muay Blam (มวยปล้ำ) and Kon Muay (กลมวย).
These are subdivided by classifying the mechanism of the attack, as seen in the Chung portfolio, or the tactics of counterattacking and incursions as in the Kon curricula.
This is done according to the weapon being utilized or countered.
The Chung category consists of 65 fundamental offensive actions divided by the working weapons into four categories :
The 15 Fist Offensives, or "Chung Mad" (เชิงหมัด) ;
The 24 Elbow Offensives, or "Chung Sok" (เชิงศอก) ;
The 11 Knee Offensives, or "Chung Kao" (เชิงเข่า) and ;
The 15 Feet Offensives, or "Chung Tao" (เชิงเท้า).
The Kon Muay portfolio consists of 82 tactics divided into five categories :
Kon Kae Mad (กลเเก้หมัด), 29 methods of countering punches ;
Kon Kae Tao (กลเเก้เท้า), 23 methods of countering kicks or feet ;
Kon Kae Kao (กลเเก้เข่า), 3 methods of countering knee attacks ;
Kon Kae Sok (กลเเก้ศอก), 4 methods of countering the elbows and ;
Kon Jujoem (กลจูโจม), 23 methods of incursions or preemptive offensives.
It should be noted that the Kon Muay curriculum also includes all of the primary variations of the methods of Mae Mai (เเม่ไม้) and Look Mai (ลูกไม้), a fact that renders mention of those categories redundant for purposes of the section of the book.
Also of note is the lack of any category which discusses one form of percussive attack the Headbutt or "Ti Hua" (ตีหัว).
As above delineated the traditional teachings list four categories of weaponry known collectively as "Nawa Awut" (นวอาวุธ), however, in this work we shall augment that number to further elucidate the methods of percussive force to 6 .
This number represents the classical 4 with a bifurcation of Tao into 2 separate categories of "Teep" (ถีบ) or Linear path kicks , and "Teh" (เตะ) ,or Circular path kicks, as well as a Ti Hua category.
The aspects of Muay Thai Boran application of percussive weaponry that we will cover in the section will include "Mai Ruk" (ไม้รุก) or the offensive techniques. These techniques can manifest in 1 to 4 individual actions called "Mai Ruk_Jangwa"(ไม้รุก_จังหวะ), as well as "Mai Kae" (ไม้เเก้), which are counterattacking techniques which include defensive measures in their maneuvers.
The defensive techniques category is called "Mai Rap" (ไม้รับ).
The techniques may involve a single weapons, dual weapons be they unilateral, bilateral or medial, triadic and even quadratic attacks, which simultaneously deliver 2 to 4 weapons in Salvo.
They may consist of aerial attacks, or "Gradoed" (กระโดด) climbing attacks,or "Yiab"(เหยียบ), or include other categories of offenses such as "Mai Tum" (ไม้ทุ่ม), or the throwing techniques, or "Mai Hak" (ไม้หัก), the techniques which destroy or compromise the integrity of the articular system, within the body of their actions.
Without further Ado we present the following six chapters that exemplify the traditions techniques and science of the six methods of delivering percussive force using the weaponized MTB organism :
The Formidable Fists ;
The Uber Ulnas ;
The Ferocious Femurs ;
The Fierce Feet ;
The Terminal Tibias and ;
The Hellacious Headbutts...
